En 1885, dans un village du Nevada, un homme annonce que le fermier Kinkaid a été assassiné. Un autre donne une autre version des faits. Le shérif étant absent, le meilleur ami de Kinkaid, aidé d'un commandant sudiste et d'un shérif adjoint, vont former une milice malgré l'opposition du juge.
