En 1947, la famille du petit Ah Hsio, surnommé Ah Ha, choisit de fuir le communisme et quitte son pays, la Chine, pour s'installer à Taïwan. Après le décès du père, la tribu part pour le sud de l'île, où la vie s'avère particulièrement difficile. Quant à Ah Ha, son existence s'écoule paisiblement. Après les jeux insouciants de son enfance, il grandit et connaît ses premiers émois amoureux…
